Short tunnels and/or very low trafficked tunnels

The recommendations presented in the previous pages of the chapter "Operation" are not always relevant (or may be difficult to implement) for short tunnels, or very low trafficked tunnels, or tunnels located in remote areas with low population densities.

For these particular tunnels, it is recommended to carry out a detailed specific analysis for each tunnel (or group of tunnels located on the same road network), taking into account:

  • geographical and climatic conditions,
  • local or regional resources available in the vicinity: authorities, operator, emergency services, etc.,
  • economic context,
  • exposure to risk and level of risk.

This analysis will then make it possible to organise and to implement the most suitable operating system, according to the specific conditions of these tunnels.
